In my opinion this hotel provides massive values.
#1, Maui as a whole does not provide the aloha experience any more. probably the entire Hawaii islands. Hana as a remote town in the east Maui was barely affected and in here we once again felt the genuine aloha smiles, that is lack of literally anywhere else.
#2, it provides a lot of buffer time to appreciate the town of Hana and adjacent areas. The red sand beach next to the resort is a stunning place and we actually see a monk seal sleeping in the red sand beach. the trail is DANGEROUS, so any one-day road to Hana round trip will be overwhelmed by the Pipiwai trail and rushing to the way back - and hence, doing the red sand beach doesn't justify. With at least a night as buffer, one gets to enjoy the red sand beach (and the trail with time), the adjacent Hana Beach park with fine black sand, and the massive resort ground with a quasi infinity pool, endless green lawns, chairs on the cliff, easy steps actually down the cliff into the lava coast, and likely an easy morning slot on the black sand beach state park. A one day round trip on road to Hana made all these impossible, or at least impossible to enjoy.
#3, it may not have the best chef, but it definitely sources from local food. one just have to ask which items. I believe beef and local catch are those that are sourced locally, as well as vegetables. they are definitely "fresh" and one can taste the difference.
We are staying here for two nights, and I am writing this wrapping up my second night.. It's definitely the high mark of our 8 nights Hawaii vacation - 2 days in Kauai, 2 days in WA grand Wailea, and 2 days in Hana Maui resort. Upgraded to an ocean view bungalow may completely changed our experience. Comparatively, the crowd of WA and literally no smile from housekeeping - or anyone not directly customer front - made the WA a miserable existence.
My takeaways:
1. ocean view bungalows or above matters. use all means to get there, including paying cash, paying cash upgrades, communications with hotel. it's worth it.
2. The hotel definitely can fill up the activities of a 3 day/2 night trip. this includes various adjacent beaches and parks, the hotel grounds, the hotel activities, and time to retreat in a remote location. On 4th night/5th day, it probably starts to get boring, and spending 5+ nights would likely be a personal preference - I was told that someone was staying here for 10 nights. For what it's worth, this is a serene retreat - but without a great beach.
