For the last 20 years staying at this property, I have received probably 1-2 meaningful upgrades (i.e. higher floor, better view does not mean a thing, I don‘t stay in my room 24x7), even though as you said there are other availabilities.
The executive lounge is a joke lately, I stayed there 3 nights mid-Dec and 3 nights end Dec, the 1st 3-nights you‘re required to make a reservation out of 2 timeslots for the evening and max stay is for 1 hour, and the 3 nights now end of Dec you have to make reservation of a slight out of 3 time slots for the evening also each is for 1 hour. This is a no-no to me, this means rush rather than relax.
I‘ve also been given a traffic light card upon check-in for breakfast telling me the best time to go (green of course that‘s like 6am), then, yellow period and a red period. This is telling me they soon will also require breakfast slot reservation in the executive lounge.
This hotel is on the decline, they‘ve become so commercialized trying to monetize every cents, therefore, have way oversold their rooms with executive lounge access, resulting into the current situation. To me, if they want to sell more, fix the problem properly instead of cutting loyal client‘s benefits.
