Turkish is actually among the airlines that are more likely to overbook flights. Especially on routes with a lot of Y demand and fluctuating demand in J, such op-ups can be semi-common. Think flights to countries with a lot of Turkish migrants in Central/Western Europe, or routes to Central Asia.
All airlines routinely overbook flights: I had no idea that Turkish was a greater proponent of this marketing ploy than other carriers.
Extra passenger loads from missed connections and cancellations upset the algorithms developed by revenue teams to manage overbooking. The fixed business-class capacity of narrow-body aircraft means that Turkish has less flexibility to handle these perturbations in demand than many of its competitors. Where BA moves the curtain forward, TK moves passengers forward instead.
In a long career with Turkish I have benefitted from all this only twice, both times between Istanbul and Cairo.
