I looked into pet transportation via cargo since the UK does not allow animals to travel in the cabin at all. A one-way ticket for a regular-size housecat from Turin to London was well over £3000 and involved the animal being placed in a quarantine facility for an indeterminate amount of time - somewhere around 5-6 hours at least depending on a number of factors out of my control. I think pet owners should be given some credit for knowing what's best for their pet just as parents are given consideration for schlepping an infant on an intercontinental flight.
