Italy has always been redundant with passport stamping, even before the EES. They have their own digital system since years, so stamping has always been unnecessary for their internal records.
prior to ees stamping was always done in Italy. As noted, it was essential for monitoring your Schengen allowance across the region. The Italians having their own system doesn’t help a danish immigration officer working out how long you have been in Schengen in the last 90 days.

and yes Szg does have ees in place but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s fine - just look at PRG or LIS or a few others where people are now reporting multi hour delays. However, having been to Szg recently I can say in my experience it was quick and didn’t delay my entry - albeit it will be slower if you happen to land just after another non-Schengen flight - we were the only ns at the time.
