Italy has always been redundant with passport stamping, even before the EES. They have their own digital system since years, so stamping has always been unnecessary for their internal records.
The issue being that you can leave through other Schengen countries so without an entry stamp the border staff get confused.

Any recent Salzburg experiences? Heading there on the 1st and wondering how much time we'll get taken out of the day trip.
