I'm flying YYZ-IAD-SFO with a 7 hour connection (it was cheap), hence my desire.
I've not seen that happen in a long time. There is no J availability in any fare buckets on any IAD-SFO flight except the 1005pm tonight. I wonder if they incorrectly found "Z" and then couldn't sell it to you so they defaulted to your original flight. There should obviously be a red warning that "due to last minute availability, we are unable to change your flight." I saw that a lot ~2 weeks ago on ORD-LGA with everything being cancelled and delayed and SDC failing often. At this moment you are stuck on the flight you have unless you can either a) find a connection through ORD/DEN/IAH and possibly EWR but probably not with that being "Polaris-like"; b) hoping "Z" opens up on the earlier flight(s) and you can grab it.
