Merry I.T. Christmas! This is the way unfortunately to go and it will take a transition time for him to get used to gMail but probably for the best. If he gets email newsletters on a daily/weekly basis try and subscribe to them for him on his new email address and slowly over time he might depend less on .pst Outlook.
