We took a regular Uber to the LAX D1 entrance. I didn't know exactly how to do it either. As we approached the D1 entrance, still in the outer roadway, I instructed the driver to drop us off at what was probably the "shared rides" island curb. Don't know if that's technically allowed but that's what we did. When then walked across the inner roadway and easily entered the terminal.
