Well, as another former Macdonald, I am willing to bet 1 Great British pound sterling that this is the same operator as the Manchester Marriott Piccadilly - I mean, really, what are the odds that I would also only be given two pillows here?

I think when you consider the price difference, this property becomes slightly more tolerable, but there were plenty of issues - both operational as well as physical - that would probably lead me to not come back. Here are my impressions and photos:

Note: I didn’t ask about late checkout nor was I offered it because of my flight schedule.

Pros:
  • Bed is comfortable - it’s two obvious twins pushed together, but the mattresses are medium, the covers are thick, and the pillows (that are there) are plush - I slept well
  • Shower pressure is good (I used the wand)
  • The brownie in the lounge in the afternoon was good
  • Service was friendly

Neutral:
  • There is a large gym, but it closes at 10 PM on weekdays and 8 PM on weekends
  • I was given a 20 percent off dining voucher and had some leftover cash to spend - I used it on a sticky toffee pudding which frankly was not that amazing as the cake was too spongy (and I love sticky toffee pudding)
  • Only “upgraded” to Club King - Club rooms are on floor 1 - nothing else higher available online

Cons:
  • Only two pillows - others were sealed in bags
  • Shower did not properly drain - I had to turn off water periodically to allow it to drain
  • No desserts during evening service in the lounge
  • Lounge breakfast (restaurant is 5 pounds extra) was not very good - I didn’t like the scrambled eggs, and the milk part of the coffee machine was broken so you could only have Americanos or espresso - the chocolate muffin was bad, the croissant was okay
  • The location - basically everything of interest is up a large hill, and the surrounding area is not that appealing (I personally find the Royal Mile too touristy)
