All good questions, I should have provided.
No checked bags, it's just a quick trip to SMF, but yes last flights of the day for both DL/WN. Got a really good deal on the AA flight.
Not the end of the world if they missed it, they just want to get home sooner, but I think DL will probably just give them extra breathing room.
