Sometimes the fee will be stated at booking. But more commonly you won't know the amount unless/until it's assessed. It's one of the major "gotchas" of points bookings and a little surprising there's not been a class action directed to the practice.

Yep, I've seen this in other award reservations including that hotel. They usually state that the cancelation fee in the cancelation terms of the reservation at least nowadays. My question is rather when it is not spelled out in the reservation, and the hotel does not list any terms on their website, and Marriott portal is their official sales channel (so could not find other terms on a more "direct" booking) - how would one know that the no-show fee actually would be that they implicitly agree to? I'm not disputing that the terms say that points are returned and cash cancelation fee is collected, just trying to understand where that cancelation fee would be expected to be defined.
