So here's an interesting wrinkle. I had a regular trip that I was considering using to kick off chasing status through March. I did SAN - IAD, and the return did not end in SAN because of weather, instead diverting to ONT and then the flight was canceled. I ended up renting a car and driving home.
The Points Activity shows my return flight ended in ONT, so obviously this won't count as a flight touching SAN for the purposes of the promotion.
That's a pretty clear case of calling in to customer care and asking for original routing credit.
