Death by a thousand nicks?

Flying in F class DFW-SFO yesterday, I noticed something weird and crappy tasting in the ramekin of warm nuts. As a result, I kind of picked at the nuts, leaving the unidentifiable interloping stuff largely untouched.

Glancing over, I noticed the pax to my right doing the same thing. He didn't know what these things were either... they looked like little tiny nuts.... I vaguely recall seeing something similar at a low-end dive bar a while back.

Is this yet another cost-cutting move?

The adjoining pax and I both discussed in bewilderment how AA insists on using the Chinese water-torture approach to cost-cutting... just nicking away here and there without coherent explanation. Maybe they think that if everything is taken away gradually, no one will notice.
