Rail isn't really much use for trips around Cambridge, apart from Bury St Edmunds. I'd just buy a day return on the day.

For London it really depends where you want to go. Short infrequent bus and tube hops, either Oyster or contactless. if you are planning lots of travel then a Travelcard may be worth considering. If going outside the Travelcard zones then it gets more complex!
