I do this with some frequency. If the prepaid balance has already been charged, nothing is refunded, but the new lower rate is always (automatically) honored. I then spend the extra deposit at the property.
Of course, at least IME, a lot of the time the prepaid deposit isn't charged anyhow, which is nice, so then there's nothing lost at all.
