I'm currently thinking it's smarter to forgo the potential through check with LH and therefore avoid midfield CBP altogether. Bag drop cutoff with United is 45min domestic? Appreciate inputs.

I arrived on LH418 earlier this week. Getting the bags off of the plane took
forever, but there was but a minimal line at immigration, and none at all at customs by the time the bags came off. Security had a line but it moved quickly. My original connecting flight time was at 5:55, and I likely would
barely have made it -- it was delayed until about 8 PM. For a scheduled 7:56 PM flight, I can't imagine that midfield vs. main terminal would make a difference.
