Marketing click-bait. They should have waited a fortnight and released it in the bit between Xmas and New Year. Would have got more traction.
From a purely marketing/PR point of view, it makes sense to push out all the features that fill space in newspapers/on breakfast TV now, so that as many people as possible can be on holiday between Christmas and New Year. As others have stated, the trend seems very thin. Surely using your holiday as a chance to get out of your usual alarm clock routine has been a normal thing for decades.
