AA are usually very flexible with cash bookings - you should be able to cancel it and receive a travel credit to use for a replacement flight. I have done this several times for a flight initially booked from Miami to Quito return, changing to Boston-Miami-Quito-Miami , then cancelling and booking Miami-Quito return for later dates - and still have a $150 travel credit from the amount I originally paid...
