PreCOVID this was a hard rule. During COVID, UA loosen the rues and they stayed loose for a couple of years and then UA slowly start returning to the traditional rule. But for a variety reasons, the restriction was leaky. But has gotten much stricter in 2025. Any workaround gets plugged in due time.

What would be the ground for such a waiver, UA in multiple places, clearly documents the limitation.

A few months ago, (have not tried recently), get the FFC and use as a purchase credit for a new ticket near the expiration. Then try to change the flight date past the expiration. It may work, it may not work.

The other option is to watch this thread in case finds a new workaround.
