AIrlines usually have very barebone agreements with the alternates/diversion airports. Normally they just fuel up and send the aircraft on its way. In this case it seems they arranged alternative transportation for some reason, either due to instruction from the crew or the operations center. Duty of care would also apply when extraordinary circumstance exist (weather), EU 261 compensation would not.
Sure, my complaint only goes towards the (total lack of) duty of care, as they somehow and with huge delay got us to the destination. But it would also be nice to know why they ditched the passangers and decided to fly empty to the original destination (and not back to the origin).
