My AF posted 11/30. I have 45 days from the time they told me about the renewal fee on my 11/19 statement to call and close the account. So my plan is to wait until 12/20 when my miles and LPs from this month should post and then call and cancel. I will be asking them for info about the transition plan. Not sure that I would keep it even if they were to waive the AF; I guess it would depend a bit on the transition plan.

For what it’s worth, in my last membership year I spent enough for the companion cert and 5000 LPs. This time I am not reaching either threshold.
