When I upgraded either the Surpass, or the no-fee card... can't remember which.... a couple years ago, I received a free night certificate for upgrading, another certificate posted in 2-3 months because I had the Aspire, and I got another certificate the following year, in 2-3 months after I was charged another annual fee.
The free night certificate that I got from upgrading was completely unexpected, and actually showed up as FREE NIGHT UPGRADE CERTIFICATE in my Hilton account. Good Luck.
