I'm a Uni student (not sure how much poorer you could get) and I'm not running to the media whenever I have to pay full Y to get home due to my poor planning lol.
I get there are probably edge cases e.g medical/funeral (even though there are compassionate fares), but the reality is that travel is a luxury. Take a bus if you want to save money...
I'll say one thing for AirNZ: they are very generous when it comes to compassionate fares.
