Honestly I feel like they give TOO MANY upgrades, I don't actually care about the raw numbers but I do wish they would NOT upgrade anyone until boarding since it does deplete inventory and I've run into situations where I couldn't SDC because of full F cabins and end up in Y on a paid F ticket while some moocher sits up front on a free upgrade.

Clearly it's impossible to know for sure if the cabin had any window upgrades consuming those seats but it's happened to me enough times that it's statistically a certainty.
Acknowledging the nostalgia of the good ol' days, personally I'm not griping about lack of upgrades. But check out the medallion program overview, the first (and repetitive) thing mentioned is upgrades. I don't fault the company for making money, I do fault it for misleading advertising. I'm just the knucklehead that looks at the seat map 2 days ahead of time and wonders why I didn't get one of the promised T-120 upgrades for the 7 available seats. My gripe is technically about that, not the lack of upgrade itself!

I think OP's math is off a bit, but the point is valid. If you're going to pay for first, being DM is irrelevant. The choice benefits probably help offset what is invariably higher DL fares (for us, at least).

Not arguing or complaining...just thinking out loud. I appreciate the thoughts of you and others in this thread. I'll probably muddle along til LT platinum (which will hopefully correspond to wife at LT gold).
