I thought there was mention in one of the press releases that you would be able to use GGUs especially given that Titanium's in theory were getting same day upgrades. And the flights do price different depending on if you select it or not. Which tells me there is some back end logic still affecting the fare buckets.
I agree--they really need to get rid of the U space designation on these flights since it really doesn't mean anything and could only confuse people into thinking they can use their certificates to upgrade when it's not possible. Even if they did eventually allow U space upgrade certificates on these flights it would still require a higher upfare than is required on HA metal flights where even main cabin awards are eligible for certificate upgrades.
