If you are frequently at one of the airports that has a good F lounge available (LHR, HKG, SIN, BKK, MEL, SYD, HND, NRT) then it could still be worthwhile, but otherwise I agree. There is very little difference between Plat and Gold when flying QR since QR believes that anyone not in F/J is just not that important either way.
I only fly QR in paid J, so I'll survive as gold. I have to move from AS to AM, but these days the only major difference is wether I'm allowed to gamble for bedrooms, which means I'll pay more attention to getting flights with under 3 hour connections in DOH:
