No, it didn’t. It calculated a fare difference of $2600+..
That is correct, it would have been the fare difference.

What you may be able to do, depending upon several factors, is to drop OGG-HNL. That will not* cancel HNL-EWR, but it’s likely to reprice HNL-EWR. The only good way to know what the fare difference would be is to ask. You can also try to make this change online. Don’t think of it as anything to do with segments, though. Just say “I want to change the return to originate in HNL.” Note that the online change tool sometimes messes up the fare calculations pretty badly, so if you see a high number, it’s worth calling / DMing to try again.

* If HNL-EWR is sold out, it may be impossible for most agents to do this, which could effectively be the same as ‘canceling’ it. But if HNL-EWR is sold out, the correct fare difference is going to be massive anyway.
Thanks for this suggestion. I just called and they said no, that is essentially cancelling the first leg. One last question. Everything is on United metal with the exception of the OGG-HNL leg. What would likely happen If I were to call Hawaiian and ask them to change the OGG-HNL segment to a day earlier? Is the itinerary controlled by United?
