Who knows? I think I've only been asked once too. I haven't flown on one-way tickets as many as 99 times but it's probably around 10-20.

My dad was born in HK, but does not have an HK passport, and he got asked on the return leg of a HKG-xx-HKG flight! Because he is very stubborn, he decided to argue about it for 5 minutes instead of just showing his HKID
