I suppose there is no conflict in this - they wanted to publicize what Tom was doing and how much he was flying, BUT they did not want people to know he had a lifetime pass. United probably wanted people to believe that he was paying for a ticket every time.
If I had a client with a sweetheart deal that I didn't want anybody to know about, I wouldn't parade them before the press and name my business assets after them...
