Anyone got asked about onward flight when traveling to HKG? (I did, once recently)

As a US passport holder, I've flown into HKG on a one-way ticket many times (on HX and other airlines) and never got asked about onward flight, until a few days ago in BKK at the HX (Hong Kong Airlines) check-in counter. I got around it by saying I plan to exit HK via ground travel to Mainland China (which I might actually do, as I have a China visa and often go there).

Any idea why they asked me about onward travel?

(a) A recent Hong Kong-specific policy change?
(b) A recent HX airline-specific policy change?
(c) Because I had just purchased it the previous day (first time I ever did that)?
(d) Some other reason?
