I've seen those things (although not at the airport)...they look a bit goofy

I was referring to the thin flat flip-flops (like the one Buffett wears and cost about a buck) or sandals like Teva's that are only about 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick sole (which from my understanding don't fit the profile).
My point was that at CAE, everything comes off, regardless of whether or not it fits any profile. If it doesn't come off, you are automatically selected for extra screening. My understanding is that's not the way it's supposed to work, but there is such inconsistent application of the rules and guidelines, that to be honest, I'm not even sure I understand them, even after pouring through the details at tsa.gov.
