Why is it 100% irrelevant? Asking a repeat guest if it's his first stay at the property betrays a lack of attention to detail and is simply poor hospitality. There's no excuse for it when the information is right there on the screen. Is it the end of the world at a roadside Hampton Inn? No. But I've been asked at a Conrad where I've stayed several times and spent thousands of dollars. Equally bad is failure to acknowledge first-time guests and explain hotel amenities and policies (again, more important at full-service than limited).
