How do I know the type of fare?

I have been reading the posts here for quite some time. I see people talking about booking Y or B or U, etc. Is there a way to know what type of fare you have booked when you book over the web? I usually book at alaskaair.com and generally buy the cheapest fare available...is there something in the return email from AS or something in "view reservations" that will tell me the fare class? Also, I assume the letter abbreviations are different for each airline, correct? Thanks for any information.
