I went back and checked and it seems like it actually varies by merchant. For Accor it seems to just go by the reservation number as I have ended up getting credit where I modified things in the past, but only for the original booking amount. For Marriott I've only done it once and didn't get credit - not sure why. So yeah not really helpful data points haha.
