Same here. I can count on one hand the number of times I've needed a late check-out in my three thousand nights plus of hotel stays. It's fascinating to me how my experience mirrors yours, with many properties proactively offering the late check-out, while some other posters who really love late check-outs claim they can never get them...
I don't get that either. I've had to argue for it a handful of times over however many years since Marriott bought Starwood (was never an issue with Starwood, ever), but more often I've had it offered to me proactively. I guess like anything else in the hospitality industry, especially in NA, YMMV depending on the property, the day, the time and the Associate you get standing in front of you. I very often do take advantage of it, but when I don't need it I try to make a point of saying so in order that the property has the room available. That said, somehow housekeeping seems to do a pretty good job of keeping track of the minute the room has been vacated and swarming it like vultures, and they never seem to know on the sheet if you're supposed to have a 4pm check-out, so not sure how much what the FDA records matters in the end as the systems don't seem to talk to each other (Reservations and Housekeeping).
