Is there such a thing as too much de-icer

On a BA flight from EDI this morning and seems plane "picked up a bit of ice in the descent" so needed de-iced.
But then what happened was that thick fluid was hosed onto the wing followed by a shot of steam on the outer part of the wing.
It survived the taxi and eventually rolled off as the plane took off.
Never seen that before, usually you get a mix of fluid and steam.
