You can not mix saver and non-saver awards. If you can not get the XN/IN combo, doubt the agent will either, but it is worth a try. Worst case is a multiple ciry award and pay for the domestic separately.
Thanks. Multi city prices XN + IN for 122k miles, which is acceptable. Going to try calling it in tomorrow assuming inventory still shows up...
ETA: Went in this morning and did a "Change Flight" and added a segment... .bomb was techy, as the added segment moved above the current one, but I was able to do IAD-LAX in YN (22.9k) and LAX-MEL in IN (100k), for a total of 122.9k. I still think the first segment should have been available in XN even with married segment rules (XN > 0 on both the individual flights and the whole itin when booked not in multicity mode), but it is still a huge savings over the prior offer of Polaris for 279.9k (a "sale" from 300k, LOL). So now a happy wife in Polaris sitting next to me for all segments, unless of course I clear into J for either of the domestic segments (not looking likely even for Tuesday travel given current position on the waitlist).
