The easy path to Gold now is 'guy who buys a last minute J fare to JFK 4-5 times a year', who is much less likely to care about this. A Club Europe return a fortnight isn't going to get you Gold anymore.
Very true, currently I'll drop unless BA hands out extensions. But gold is keeping my loyal to BA for now, when my status drops I have no reason to stick with BA as silver means nothing to me. I'll just fly business (or first class train if domestic) on whichever carrier offers the best timings.
