Hey OP, curious to know how you got on with this? I bought connectmiles on promo and was going to simply redeem them online, and it was all going well until I reach the last screen that processes my payment for the tax component. Then it didn't really go anywhere. I called Copa and their agent insisted that I needed at least a silver status to book a star alliance flight (eye roll). I asked him to point out where on the t&C it specifically said that, and he wasn't able to do it (another eye roll).
It was somewhat reassuring to know this was similar to your own experience dealing with them lol. Did you end up taking the risk and made it work?
