Sure, if customers weren't so price sensitive. But the reality is that there is a market for this. Look at the success of the Basic Y fares in the US, for example.

But, wouldn't that end up beign better for your stated goals? Both to encourage elites to buy up to a higher than lowest class (unless they actually want to travel super light) and it solves your problem with negative-margin PfLs. Buying up to get XP has comparatively limited utility.
That's one opinion, and which in all honesty I also tend to agree with. But you try telling that to the self-entitled Platinum member who complains when he's turned away from the lounge just because he (or worse, his assistant) bought the 'sale' fare.
