As far as the ignoring GS issue, I've seen it so many places that it just is crazy. I know the gate agents are busy and just trying to get the plane loaded, but still. My strategy is to wait in line patiently or go up to the desk when they are are free and simply ask "where should a GS stand by for preboarding?" They usually point to exactly where I would have gone anyway, but it reminds them that there is a GS to board (yes, I know it is in their computer, but the reminder seems to work). With that strategy, the gate agent is usually looking for me and makes eye contact as he/she is making announcements. Note I do not approach it in a DYKWHIA approach, but rather as just unsure and asking for information in a pleasant manner. Just my 2 cents' worth but it seems to work.
I have used that very same technique many times myself
