Just posting my data points from earlier trips, both were one way 016 tickets on one reservation:

LAX - HND - HKG (UA / ANA), transit time was 28 hours, luggage checked through to HKG, worked out perfectly
HKG - HND - LAX (ANA / UA), transit time was 18 hours, agent at HKG double confirmed with supervisor, UA connections over 12 hours do not allow check through, so did not work out!!
