The post by "formerAA" is correct. Think of it this way. Anytime you book a flight, you can only apply one frequent flyer number to accrue miles. So when you are redeeming AS miles, it is coming from your AS FF account. Your benefits on AA would not apply. This was explained to me by an AS agent as "double dipping". The AA agent was nice enough to change it, but this is not allowed.

Generally speaking, you can't use one miles from one airline's frequent flyer program and apply status benefits from another airline. This is basically mashing up two programs into one.
