Do not put any frequent flyer number in. Then, once it's ticketed, go to aa.com and manage your trip via the record locator provided at booking and then add your number there. Then give it a few minutes and you'll be added to the upgrade list.
I did this back in June, so I could use Touchless ID at ATL. Worked without issues.
