sbiddle , it seems like they have multiple queues which could easily be condensed and streamlined. Separating people, then mixing them, then separting people, then mixing them again, is just pointless.
I feel like whichever Govt department manages this zero understanding of queue management and customer flows (no surprise). I recall straight after Covid those horrendous queues which made no sense whatsoever. And now this 'improvement', whilst better, is still a long way short of seamless. It's not rocket science either...take one look at a few airports that do it well (i.e. SIN), and replicate that.
SIN has the space.
Customs, MBIE & MPI need to lobby for more space during terminal redevelopment and also have some crowd people look at flows. Immigration has a lot of space in AKL good flow from Gates.
Then the stairs drop you into the wrong place basically the exit & have to back track for baggage belts. Say Singapore come down the escalators can see the gates. Then can see the exit & see the baggage claim. They have more space and seems to be thought out better.
Also comparing to SIN is a bit of a miss as post baggage claim is very light touch. NZ & Aussie with bio security is a different best. May be that's the problem airport designers look at overseas layout and space requirements for benchmarking & fail to forget biosecurity. NZ & Aussie airports basically need the same space for immigration post baggage claim (may be more as longer mean processing per person than immigration)
Would say the issue is more airport designers than Govt. They are working with what given and seeing not commercially profitable space airport doesn't look after them as well.
