Agree, what they've chosen is stupid marketing.
Those long in the tooth might recall the base AirNZ status level was Jade.

Over the past few months we've sought feedback about the Airpoints™ programme from tens of thousands of Jade, Silver, Gold and Gold Elite members.
People told us they like the simplicity and ease of being able to redeem their Airpoints Dollars™ for any seat on any flight, however they felt that earning rates didn't fairly reflect the price they pay for their airfare on many short haul flights.
We agreed. So we're making changes to Airpoints Dollar and Status Point earning rates and making them available on every regularly available fare (excluding last minute greenlight fares via grabaseat.co.nz and fares purchased using Airpoints Dollars). As a result, we expect several million more Airpoints Dollars to be earned by members each year.
