I found the larger footwell to be a worthwhile trade-off for being more exposed to the aisle (but was also auto-assigned a seat in Row 1 and wasn't going to pay ITA more to change it).
Their seat assignment fees are very annoying indeed. I recently had two longhauls in business class with them and was not in the mood to pay, would have been around $150 each time, even at online check in.
