Two separate things - Alipay and VPN

Firstly, bought a Chinese sim yesterday and not one VPN will connect (free ones that were installed beforegand) and don't want to pay £35 or whatever for one if it's not going to connect anyway.
Can't use the Google play store to download another to try, so how are you supposed to do anything?

Main issues are Gmail wont work, so as far as I know, my flight home could be cancelled and I've no idea, or anything important....

Google maps. Takes a minute or two but will roughly show me where I am, but zero search capability i.e. I'm lost, where's my hotel? Or where are tourist attractions,

Want to buy some food, but no idea where anything other than cupboard sized 7-11s are.

Secondly, Alipay.
Went to buy a Y3 ticket for the subway, and declined as Alipay decided my transaction was fraudulent.
(Spent around Y370 so far - sim, maglev and 2 subway tickets). Nowhere near the 15000 that requires verification
in order to get the card working, Alipay want:
Bank statement
Front and back pics of the card
Passport picture
....and who knows what else.

Not sure if i can delete the card and add it again?

Did add a second card and that was successful in being charge 32p for the subway fare
