That has to do with the hotel not being that busy at that time. You would have gotten the upgrade before them if only one Exec room was left, and if none were, you still would have had Executive lounge access and they would not have. The hotel must have been pretty slow during your stay, with both a lack of Executive Room bookings, and a lack of Diamond members staying. I would chalk this up to good timing for your parents.
